Catching Fire: Defying the capitol.
In the
book, Catching Fire, there are a lot of acts of defiance towards President
Snow. An act of defiance is a daring or bold resistance to authority or an
opposing force; an act that challenges power. Some people who are defiant in
the book that we are reading are Katniss, Peeta, The Tributes and Cinna.
One
character who shows defiance is Katniss. She hung a dummy with Seneca Crane’s
name on it during her private session with the Gamemakers. Katniss knows that
Seneca died as a result of her actions in the games. She is reminding President
Snow that she beat the system last time. On page 242, Katniss tells Peeta that
she did it to “show them that I’m more than just a piece in there games.” This
shows that she is done letting the Gamemakers and President Snow control her.
The
second tribute who shows defiance is Peeta. He painted Rue’s body covered with
flowers from the 1st games. Peeta is reminding Snow and the
Gamemakers they are responsible for her death. Snow doesn’t want respect
between tributes. On page 240, Peeta did it to “hold them accountable, if only
for a moment, for killing that little girl.” This shows that Peeta did it to
show blame to President Snow for putting harmless little kids into the arena.
The
third persons who show defiance were The Tributes. In their interviews they
questioned the legality of the games. They say Snow could stop the games but won’t.
They are blaming Snow on live television. They are turning the capitol citizens
against Snow. The tributes also hold hangs in unity. Snow wants the tributes to
be enemies not unified. They see competitor’s as humans. On page 251, Seeder
said “if everyone assumes that President Snow is all powerful. So if he’s
all-powerful, why doesn’t he change the quell?” Seeder said this because he
wants the Quarter Quell to stop or change. In the text it also says “all
twenty-four of us stand in one unbroken line in what must be the first public
show of unity among the districts since the Dark Days.” This shows that the
Tributes are together in this one, unity, and it symbolizes there love towards
one another.
The
fourth person who showed defiance was Cinna. He turns Katniss’s wedding dress
that snow picked out into a mockingjay. He turned her dress into the symbol of
the rebellion. The dress backfired on the capitol. On page 253, “A shadow flickers
across Caesar’s face, and I can tell he knows that the mockingjay isn’t just my
token. That is symbolizes so much more.” This shows that Cinna did it to show
President Snow that the mockingjay is still a symbol of hope.
In
conclusion, I feel that Cinna was more defiant towards President Snow. I feel
that because he turned Katniss wedding dress, the one President Snow precisely
picked out, into a mockingjay.
