In class we are reading Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins.
We are identifying acts of defiance or rebellion against the capitol. There are
many acts of defiance in pages 236-258. Here are a few examples of defiance
against the capitol.
Katniss hung a dummy with Seneca Cranes name on it for her
private session with the game makers. This reminds the game makers that she
beat the games, and caused Senecas death. On pages 242, Katniss did this to,
“show them that she’s more than just a piece in their games.” Katniss is done
being a part of their sick twisted games.
During Peeta’s private session he paints a picture of Rue.
This shows defiance because the tributes are not supposed to care about each
other. On page 240, Peeta says he did it, “to hold them accountable, if only for a
moment, for killing that little girl.” Peeta is doing this to show that they
are responsible for her death, not the tribute that killed her.
At the end of the interviews all the tributes held hands in
unity. This shows President Snow that they are sticking together, even when he
wants them to be enemies. On page 258, the text says, “all twenty-four of us
stand in one unbroken line in what must be the first public show of unity among
the districts since the Dark Days.” They are showing that they are one, that
they all care for one another.
Cinna turns Katniss’s wedding dress into a Mocking Jay, the
Mocking Jay is a symbol of rebellion. On page 253, Katniss thinks, “What has he
done? Something terribly dangerous. An act of rebellion in itself.” Katniss is
worried because he is promoting the rebellion on national television.
I think President Snow would think the tributes holding
hands is the more defiant, because he doesn’t want them to care about one
another, he wants them to go into the arena and kill each other. Another reason
it is the most defiant is that the tributes are trying turn the capitol
citizens against Snow.
