Defiance Blogger Assignment: Catching Fire
In the book, Catching Fire, an act
of defiance means a daring or bold resistance to authority. The Tributes and
Cinna show a lot of acts of defiance in the book. Here are some examples of
their acts of defiance.
One character that shows defiance
is Katniss. She hangs a dummy with Seneca Crane’s name on it during her private
session. Katniss knows that Seneca died as a result of her actions. She is
reminding Snow that she beated the system last time. On page 242, Katniss told
Peeta she did to,” Show them that I’m more than a piece in their games.” This
shows she is done letting the Gamemakers and Snow control her.
Another character that shows
defiance is Peeta. He painted Rue’s body covered with flowers from the first
game. On page 240, Peeta tells Katniss that,” I just wanted to hold them
accountable if only for a moment for killing that little girl.” He is reminding
Snow and the Gamemakers that they are responsible for her death. And, Snow
doesn’t want respect between the tributes.
A third act of defiance was by the
Tributes. They all hold hands in unity. Snow wants the Tributes to be enemies
not friends. The Capitol people see the Tributes as humans. On page 258, the
Tributes did it to show,” The first public show of unity among the Districts
since the Dark Days.” This shows that even through the Hunger Games, Snow
cannot break up the Districts.
A fourth act of defiance is from
Cinna. He turned the wedding dress that Snow picked out into out, into a
Mockingjay. He turned her dress into the symbol of rebellion. On page 253, Cinna
did it to show,” An act of rebellion itself.” This shows that Cinna is telling
the Capitol citizens that Katniss is not one of them.
I feel that President Snow would
find the Tributes holding hands more defiant. Because the Hunger Games was
supposed to spilt up the Districts and Tributes. So the Tributes holding hands
in unity would be highly rebellious.
