Period 2

Catching Fire: Defying the Capitol

In the book Catching Fire particularly chapters 16-18 and are many acts of defiance and rebellion against the Capitol. I will be explaining who was defiant, why it was defiant, and which one I think is the most rebellious.

Katniss Everdeen

On pages 236-237, Katniss is called up for her private training session and decides to show that “I am more than just a piece in Snows games” she says. So she decides to hang up a dummy that has the name “Seneca Crane” written on it ”There are a few screams and gasps some even faint” she says.

Peeta Melark

On page 256, Peeta tells the audience during his interview that Katniss is pregnant and makes up a story to increase drama” I’m not glad.” Says Peeta. “I wish we had waited until the whole thing was done officially.” This takes even Caesar back. “Surely even a brief time is better than no time?” says Caesar, “Maybe I’d think that too Caesar” says Peeta bitterly “I fit weren’t for the baby.” says Peeta.

The Tributes

On pages 257-258, all the tributes deicide to hold hands together and raise them up in the air. I think this is defiant because the tributes are supposed to hate and want to kill each other. But then this happens “Up and down the row, the victors join hands. Some right away like Wiress and Beetee, or get caught up in the moment like me and Enobaria.

Cinna

Cinna was defiant because he turned Katniss’s dress into a Mockingjay. This is defiant because it represents the symbol  of the rebellion. Snow also says this.

Out of all the acts of defiance I think Katniss’s dress turning into the Mockingjay was the most defiant because it directly signifies the rebellion.
