Defying the capitol

By, Kayla Brown

Block 7

In class we are reading Catching Fire and talking about defiance. Defiance is a daring or bold resistance to authority or an opposing force; an act that challenges power. Here are some examples.

One character who shows defiance is Katniss. She hung a dummy with Seneca crane’s name on it during her private session with the game makers. The reason Katniss did this was because the old game maker was killed because Katniss out smarted him. She’s sending a message- this could be you next. On page 236,”Do you have any idea how much I hate you? You have given your talents to the games?”

Another character who shows defiance is peeta. Peeta painted a picture of Rue’s body covered in flowers from the last game. During his private training session. The reason peeta  did this is because he is reminding the game makers that they killed the little girl. He’s also treating Rue with respect and snow don’t want that. Also peeta announces that he and Katniss are married and that Katniss is pregnant. The reason peeta also did that was because he’s trying to stop the games. The capitol citizens are now against snow. On page 256, the crowed reacts. “Even the most capitol-loving, games-hungry, blood thirsty person out there can’t ignore…how horrific the whole thing is.”

Another character who shows defiance is the tributes. During there interviews, they talk trash about snow and the games. They say  snow could stop them if he really wanted to. The reason the tributes did this is because they are turning the capitol citizens against president snow. The capitol citizens are demanding change. Also the tributes all hold hands united. The reason the tributes did this is because president snow want’s the districts and tributes to hate each other or see each other as enemies. On page 251, Chaff insists, ”the president could change the quell if he wanted to, but he must think it matters much to anyone.”

Another character who shows defiance is Cinna. He turns the wedding dress that snow demanded she wear, into a mocking jay. The reason Cinna did this is because he turned  her into the symbol of the rebellion. He is promptly the rebel. On page 253, Katniss wonders, “what has he done? Something terribly dangerous.” She knows president snow will not ignore this.

My conclusion is, I think Katniss would be the most defiant because president snow is already out to kill her. She is also doing things she shouldn’t be doing.
