Catching Fire Defiance Essay
In class we are reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and
learning about defiance. Defiance is a bold or daring resistance to authority
or an opposing force.
On page 236 Katniss in her private session with the Gamemakers
she hung a dummy with the name Seneca Crane on it. She did it because the old
Head-Gamemaker was killed because of her actions, this could be a threat to the
Gamemakers. She says on page 242 “to show them I’m not just a piece in they’re
game”.
Peeta tells the entire world that him and Katniss are already
married and Katniss is pregnant. He is turning the citizens against Snow and showing them how cruel the games are.
This is defiant because the citizens are turning against President Snow.
The Tributes in their interviews on pages 250 & 251
question the legality of the games. They say Snow could stop but wont. On page
251 Chaff says “the president could change the quell if he wanted to, but he
must not think it matters to anyone”. This is defiant because he & the
other Tributes are turning the citizens against Snow.
Cinna he took the dress snow requested & turned it into a
mockingjay. On page 253 Katniss wonders “what has he done. Something terribly
wrong. He knows President Snow will not ignore it”. It was defiant because he
turned it into the symbol of the rebellion.
In my opinion Cinna does
the most defiant thing by turning Katniss into a mockingjay on stage.
